How to Fix Gemini Login Problems: 10 Fixes That Work

Gemini login problems are annoying because the error rarely tells you what is wrong. You type in your password, and Gemini either loops back to the sign-in page, shows “something went wrong”, or keeps asking you to log in again. The cause is usually a stuck session, a browser extension, or the wrong Google account โ€” not your password. Work through the fixes below in order. Most people are back in within a few minutes. If Gemini opens but gives you other errors instead, start with our main guide on how to fix Gemini not working.

First, Check These Three Things

Before you try any fix, rule out the simple causes.

1. Are you using the right account? Gemini works with a personal Google account. If you are signed in with a work or school account, your admin may have switched Gemini off for your organisation. Try a personal Gmail account instead.

2. Is Gemini down? A login error can be a Google outage, not your device. Check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard for Gemini. If there is an outage, all you can do is wait.

3. Is your password right? Type your password slowly and check for typos, extra spaces, and caps lock. If you use two-factor authentication, make sure your phone’s date and time are set to automatic โ€” a wrong clock makes authenticator codes fail. If you have forgotten your password, use the “Forgot password?” link on the Google sign-in page to reset it.

10 Fixes for Gemini Login Problems

1. Try an incognito or private window

Open a private window in your browser and go to gemini.google.com. If it works there, the problem is in your normal browser โ€” an extension, a cookie, or saved data. That tells you the fix is in your browser, not your account.

2. Clear cookies and cache for gemini.google.com

Your browser may be holding an old or broken login token. Clear the cookies and site data for gemini.google.com only โ€” you do not need to wipe your whole browser. In Chrome, go to Settings, then Privacy and security, then Site settings, then View permissions and data stored across sites, find gemini.google.com, and clear its data. Then try to sign in again. A stuck session is also one of the reasons Gemini not loading at all, so this fix solves two problems at once.

3. Turn off extensions and your VPN

Ad blockers, script blockers, and VPNs can break Gemini’s sign-in. Turn your extensions off one by one and try again after each one. If you use a VPN, switch it off and try to sign in on your normal connection. If Gemini works with the VPN off, add gemini.google.com to the VPN’s exception list.

4. Re-save your name in your Google account

This sounds strange, but it is a fix that has worked for many people in Google’s own support forum. A stuck profile can stop Gemini from setting up your account. Go to your Google Account, open Personal info, click your name, re-type your first and last name, and save it โ€” even if it already looks right. Wait a minute, then try Gemini again.

5. Turn Gemini Apps Activity off and back on

Gemini can fail to sign you in if its activity setting is stuck. Go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini, turn Gemini Apps Activity off, wait about 30 seconds, and turn it back on. This forces a fresh sync between your account and Gemini.

6. Make sure you are not signed in with a Brand Account

If your Google account has a Brand Account attached โ€” for example, a YouTube channel identity โ€” Gemini can fail to load on desktop. Click your profile picture in the top right of any Google page and check which profile is active. Switch to your main @gmail.com profile, not the brand profile, and try again.

7. Try the Gems page to reset your session

If the main Gemini page is stuck on “something went wrong”, opening a different part of Gemini can unlock your session. Go directly to gemini.google.com/gems/create. If the page loads, create a test Gem and type a short message in the preview chat. Once you get a reply, go back to gemini.google.com โ€” the main page often loads normally after that.

8. On the mobile app: clear the app cache or reinstall

If the Gemini app will not let you in on Android, go to Settings, then Apps, then Gemini, then Storage, and tap Clear cache. Do not tap Clear storage unless you are happy to set the app up again. On iPhone, there is no cache button โ€” delete the app and install it again from the App Store. Also try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, in case your network is blocking the sign-in.

9. On a Mac: change your default browser to Chrome

The Gemini app for Mac can fail to sign in when Safari is the default browser. Safari’s privacy settings can block the redirect that hands you back to the app after sign-in. Go to System Settings, then Desktop & Dock, and change the default web browser to Google Chrome. Open the Gemini app and sign in. Once it works, you can switch your default browser back to Safari.

10. Try another device or network

Sign in to Gemini on a different device, or on your phone’s mobile data instead of your home Wi-Fi. If it works there, the problem is with your first device or network, not your account. That narrows the fix down to a browser reset or a network setting.

What If You See “Something Went Wrong” on First Login?

This error often shows up the very first time you open Gemini, even when your account is fine. It is usually a server-side sync problem: your account gets stuck during its first handshake with Gemini. Try fix 4 (re-save your name), fix 5 (toggle Gemini Apps Activity), and fix 7 (the Gems page) in that order. Together they force Google’s systems to re-sync your account, and that clears the error for most people. If Gemini loads but then stops answering you, that is a different problem โ€” see our guide on Gemini not responding.

When to Contact Google Support

If none of the fixes above work, your account may need a reset from Google’s side. Open the Gemini app on your phone, tap your profile picture, and use Send feedback to describe the problem โ€” include the exact error message and the device you are using. If you are on a work or school account, ask your IT admin to check whether Gemini is turned on for your organisation. Admins can switch Gemini on or off for the whole company, and no fix on your device will help if it is off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Gemini keep asking me to log in again?

This is usually a session loop. Your browser holds a login token that Gemini rejects, so it asks you to sign in again โ€” and the new token fails too. Clear the cookies for gemini.google.com, turn off your extensions, and try an incognito window. If the loop keeps happening on a work account, your admin may have set a session policy that signs you out.

Can I use Gemini with a school account?

It depends on your school. Google lets school admins turn Gemini on or off. If your admin has switched it off, you will see an error when you try to sign in, and only the admin can change that. A personal Gmail account will work instead.

Why does Gemini say my account is not supported?

Gemini is not available in every country, and it does not work with some account types, such as accounts managed by a parent through Family Link for young children. It also needs a full Google profile โ€” if your first name, last name, or birthdate is missing from your account, add it in your Google Account settings and try again.

Is it safe to use the Gems page trick?

Yes. gemini.google.com/gems/create is a normal part of Gemini, not a hack. It just loads a different page, which can clear a stuck session on the main page. You do not need to keep the test Gem โ€” you can delete it afterwards.
