ABOUT THESE MISTAKES WHILE PREPARING FOR CLASS 7 MATHS OLYMPIAD

Every student should know everything about what they should do and what they should avoid doing. This is because at one place our do’s will help us get marks and on the other hand if the students keep doing things that they are not supposed to do then they may even lose those marks. Therefore, students should always keep a track of what they should avoid doing during their preparation time itself to avoid facing its consequences during the exam. But what are the things that are not supposed to be done? This article covers everything that students should focus on to avoid while preparing for the Olympiad.

MISTAKES THAT SHOULD BE AVOIDED

  1.     Many students tend to prepare for hours and hours and do not take into account the time factor. Precisely, due to this reason at the time of exam, students are not able to manage their time and at times even the exam does not get over for them.
  2.     Students at times tend to just focus on the number of hours they have studied and not the amount that they studied. In this way, they are not able to complete their syllabus on time and are not well prepared during the exam. This way they are also not able to meet their other commitments.
  3.     Students should avoid wasting their time when they have given their commitment to the Olympiad.
  4.     Students should keep in mind the syllabus and the division of sections. Many students tend to ignore it and thereby are left confused when they are not able to understand their strengths and weaknesses.
  5.     Students think that just doing the syllabus is enough and would help them clear their exam but this is their misconception that needs to be avoided as if they do not practice such papers then their competence level won’t increase and it can happen that at the time of exam they are not able to solve many questions.
  6.     Students are also under the misconception that revision is not necessary and they know it all by just solving that chapter once. For those students, they should know that this is a competitive exam and anything like Maths requires a lot of practice and consistency.
  7.     Consistency is what is lacking in many students; they just practice once a week and do not even touch the book for another week. Please do not commit such a mistake.
  8.     Another major goof-up that students tend to commit is that they skip the basic foundation level. They think they were able to solve one question and can hence jump to the advanced level. Please do not skip the foundation level because any time that you give to the advanced level without strengthening your foundation level is just a waste of time.
  9.     Students avoid reading the books of their previous levels as they consider themselves as know it and thus end up making a major blunder in their development. This is because if your previous concepts are not clear then you will not be able to perform the problem solving of the present class.
  10. Students think that maths is a subject that needs no notes. Well, this is not the truth. Much of maths is based on formulas and it is difficult to remember all the formulas easily, therefore even this subject needs some notes that if gone through regularly can be of great help.
  11. Students tend to avoid going to someone for help when faced with challenges. This practice may not be very helpful if the student finds himself/herself/themselves stuck somewhere. Thus, students should approach someone they think can help them when they need help. It can be anyone like a teacher, parents, siblings, any other family member, friends, or even the internet nowadays.
  12. One major mistake that almost all students make is that after solving sample and previous year question papers, they do not check it or give it to someone for checking. This way even if they are aware of the type of questions that can come, they do not know whether what they selected was right or not and can make the same mistakes during the exam itself. Students can refer to question papers here- Class 7 IMO Question Paper 2013.
  13. Many students practice math questions using step procedures. This method is not helpful in the MCQ-based paper and students should give focus on the preparation for MCQ-type paper.
  14. Students also make major blunders by compromising their sleep and leisure time. This is not the right way to prepare for an exam. At this age, it is very important to give the body the sleep that it requires. Learn to fix a schedule to wake up and sleep at the right times.

All these mistakes are very common among the students and they tend to commit it very often. If these are not taken care of then they have the capacity to jeopardize their entire hard work. The necessity to avoid comes from their dedication towards the goal of this Olympiad and therefore this is an essential step in their preparation period itself because once it gets embedded in our practice period then it can be very hard to keep a track of them during the final exam day. All these are very basics of an individual who is going to appear for an exam and if the steps are taken care of from the very beginning then not only does it help the students not lose marks but also improves their overall performance which is not limited to the Olympiad alone but to any other math exams that the students decided to give in the near future. Make a book where you keep a track of all these mistakes for a week or two and the changes will appear. Not only will the students feel better but will also avoid them henceforth.
