How to Clean Your AC System

Your air conditioning unit helps to make your home comfortable and relaxing. As time goes on, you might find that your unit is working harder and harder to provide you with the same amount of cooling that you used to get. If you don’t maintain and clean your AC system, then it can start to break down.
Thankfully, it is not that hard to clean your AC system. So keep on reading and we’ll show you everything that you need to know!
- Turn Off the Power to the Air Conditioner
There are a lot of different parts involved with air conditioners. Because safety is so important, you want to make sure that you turn the power off at the fuse box before you start to mess with it.
This means that you won’t have any lights and you should clean your AC in the daytime.
If the indoor unit is somewhere that’s too dark, you’ll want to set up lighting beforehand.
- Open Up the AC Unit
The blower unit is going to have a door to the evaporator coil. Depending on the unit, you may need to take out the foil duct tape. There are usually a couple of screws or bolts that hold the door in place.
Sometimes, it’s best to hire a professional for AC ductwork.
- Clean the Air Conditioner Evaporator Coils
Get a soft brush and get rid of dust from the coil. The dust is going to made up of whatever dust particles are in your house. This can include pollen and skin cells.
You should wear a mask if you have allergies.
Get a no-rinse coil cleaner and spray foam into the drain pan. The cleaner will remove the dust and dirt. Spray this cleaner evenly and get it into tiny nooks and crannies.
- Clean the AC Drain Pan
After the coil cleaner is dry, clean the drain pan out. You can use soap and hot water for this.
- Close the AC Access Panel
Put the access panel back where it was. Use HVAC metal foil tape to seal the top and bottom of the panel. Don’t cover the manufacturer’s label before a technician might need to use that later.
For regular cleaning, this is all you need to do. If you don’t feel comfortable doing any of this, then you should consider hiring a professional technician.
