MahéMahé Island in the Seychelles: A Travel Guide

The Seychelles, which are about 1,000 kilometers off the coast of East Africa, has long been a perfect getaway on my list. This place is a beautiful tropical paradise, complete with gorgeous white sand beaches, lush forests, majestic mountains, and the best all-inclusive resorts in Seychelles.

The Seychelles’ main island, Mahé, is where most travelers begin their journey.

This location is a beach lover’s paradise, with exotic plants surrounding the beaches for miles. Natural beauty overflows everywhere. With granite cliffs surrounding everything, the island is full of picture-perfect coconut fields and uninhabited beaches. It’s almost impossible to put into words how gorgeous it is.

The Seychelles’ Mahé Island is featured in this article.

What to Anticipate

Ninety percent of the Seychelles’ population lives in Mahé. However, with a population of fewer than 90,000 people, the country is far from a bustling metropolis. In reality, Victoria, the capital of the Seychelles, is one of the world’s smallest cities.

Arab seafarers, British colonialists, French settlers, Tamil and Chinese traders, and African slaves all contributed to the settlement of this area. Naturally, this resulted in a unique cultural mix. The Seychelles have a distinct creole culture that integrates a wide diversity of influences, despite its remote location.

Short boat journeys or island hopper flights connect Mahé with Praslin and La Digue Islands.

On Mahé Island, What to Do

The beaches in Seychelles holiday resorts alone would be enough to fill your entire Seychelles escape. Almost every day of the year is perfect on the islands, with white-sand beaches and great weather. Mahé has a vast number of adventure services that will provide you with an unforgettable day out if you’re ready to travel beyond the coastlines. Scale the granite rocks or go rock climbing, kayaking, or scuba diving. You can get set up with all the equipment that you need for a fun day out with any of the adventure companies on the island.

For those looking for some of the best views on the island, Morne Seychellois National Park, which is located on Mahé, offers a variety of outdoor activities as well as trekking routes.

The renowned tuna caught just off the coast of Mahé Island is a must-try in the best beach bar in Seychelles, if you enjoy seafood.

Victoria is a great spot to explore if you want to learn more about Seychellois culture. It is advisable that you visit Victoria Market when you are there. Besides souvenirs and ultra-fresh seafood, this place is also a good place to grab a meal.

The manmade  Eden Island, in addition to Victoria, is another part of the island. Mahé Island’s Eden Island is home to the Eden Plaza, a shopping center with restaurants and shops you can explore.  You won’t want to miss this up-and-coming location!

Getting Around the Island of Mahé

It is only four miles wide and sixteen miles long, making it easy to move about and see everything, even though Mahé is the Seychelles’ largest island. It’s easy to get around whether you take the bus, walk, or hail a cab.

Blue buses may be seen on all of the streets and are an economical and convenient mode of transportation. You can get anywhere on the island for less than 5 Seychellois Rupees. Although far from luxurious, it offers a glimpse into everyday life while getting you to your destination. Remember to bring small changes with you, and ask for directions if needed.

Taxis are everywhere on Mahé Island as well. Whether you want a quick stopover or a full-day tour, they’re perfect for you.  A taxi boat may also be a viable choice, depending on your destination.
