Are you interested in driving a commercial motor vehicle for your next job?
It’s not for everyone, but if you love to be on the road, you might be a good fit. But how do you become a commercial motor vehicle rider? Let’s talk about it.
Keep reading for our quick guide for becoming a CDL operator.
Basic Requirements
Not everyone can be a CDL operator. Anyone who wants to drive needs to be at least 21 years of age and be fluent in English (both speaking and writing). They must be able to get a CDL license in their state of residence.
Former members of the military may be able to bypass standard CDL testing.
If you have a poor driving record, it’s possible that you’ll have a hard time getting your CDL license. Even if you do get your license, you may have trouble finding work.
Getting Your CDL License
So how does one get a CDL license? The process is similar to getting a normal driver’s license. Drivers must already have a driver’s license before they’re able to get a CDL license.
The requirements vary by state, so make sure to get a state-specific Commercial Drivers Licensing Manual. This will start you off on the right track.
Make sure that you know what type of vehicle you plan on driving. There are several classes of CDLs that require different skills and different tests.
As with a normal license, you’ll start with a learner’s permit. You will then be able to practice on public roads as long as another qualified CDL driver is with you in the vehicle. You will likely need to pass the DOT exam first (more on that later).
You need to have your learner’s permit for at least 14 days before applying for the tests to get your full license and you may need to take professional training courses.
You’ll need to pass a skills test which includes basic controls, vehicle inspection, and a road test. Passing the skills test does not guarantee you a license.
The DOT Exam
So what is a DOT physical exam?
The DOT exam is one of the federal CDL license requirements. It’s a physical exam that ensures you’re suitable for driving a commercial vehicle.
The doctor will take your basic vitals, like your blood pressure. They’ll test your vision and do a urinalysis to make sure that there’s nothing that indicates you’ll have a problem driving. They’ll also take a full health history (including mental health).
Drivers with disabilities and illnesses are still able to be CDL operators as long as their conditions don’t impair their driving abilities.
Do You Want to Drive a Commercial Motor Vehicle?
If you’re cut out to drive a commercial motor vehicle, it’s time to start the process. Get your learner’s permit and take your DOT exam to see if you qualify! Good luck with your new career as a commercial motor vehicle operator.
