1 Fort of San Diego
Acapulco’s most important historical landmark is its star fort, which was in 1617 to protect the city from pirate attacks. It was to protect the Manila galleons, a fleet that sailed the Pacific trade route between Acapulco and Spanish-controlled Manila in the Philippines and was the strongest fortification on Mexico’s Pacific coast at the time. After an earthquake in the 1770s, it was rebuilt in a regular pentagonal shape.
2 Acapulco Historical Museum
Since 1986, a museum has been within the fort, detailing Acapulco’s history and explaining the fort’s role in significant events over the last 400 years. 3 Capilla de la Paz
A tour of this monument, 400 meters above the bay’s eastern entrance, can. The chapel on “El Guitarrón,” one of the city’s highest points, with a spectacular view of the beachfront, cityscape, and Sierra Madre del Sur. The chapel was in the late 1970s is in memory of the developer Carlos Trouyet’s two sons who died in a plane crash in 1967. 4 Mural Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera’s work can on the exterior walls of Dolores Olmedo’s home, the famous art patron with whom he had a long-term relationship. The mural, a three-dimensional mosaic rich in pre-Hispanic symbols, was one of Rivera’s final works before his death in 1957. Tlaloc, the Aztec god of rain, lightning, and thunder, and a Xoloitzcuintle, a hairless dog can. The two feathered serpents of Quetzalcóatl facing each other on either side of the gate are the dominant images.
5 Punta Diamante
This new and developing Acapulco neighborhood is on the sand bar in front of the Laguna de Tres Palos to the southeast, outside the main bay. Punta Diamante, while lacking the charm and energy of Old Acapulco, compensates with space and convenience. The airport is only a few minutes away, and a new tunnel to Dorada’s traditional prime tourist zone around the bay has reduced travel times since 2017.

6 Barra Vieja
Barra Vieja is a few kilometers further along the sand bar from Punta Diamante. Barra Vieja, with its remote location and large beach, is the best place to get away from the crowds in Acapulco. The beach, like Punta Diamante, has a gentle gradient, so there is a lot of shallow water even though the waves are strong. 7 Playa Pie de la Cuesta
